One area of study that has recently caught my attention like no other has been artificial intelligence. I have never intended to study programming or computer science, nonetheless, it is the power of this tool applied to other fields that has fascinated most. From my standpoint, the idea of imagining what this tool will be capable of achieving within a decade is a subject worth exploring. My interests are primarily focused on economics, linguistics, and mathematical modelling, and natural sciences, which are areas that can be influenced by AI and its unstoppable progress in several ways, so my goal is to focus on them and disentangle how exactly this tool will define their future and that of so many more industries.

First of all, an important question that should be asked is: What could happen if AI simply did not stop learning and were able to improve itself? To fully appreciate the magnitude of this question, let’s first imagine what a machine with no biological limitations can do. It does not have to sleep, at least not in the way we as humans do; it can work continuously for hours with undivided attention, unlike us, because we are easily distracted by notifications in our cell phones and so many other things; and last but not least, it can already learn and perform the same tasks as us much faster and better than us. It is undeniable that it can and will make mistakes, but that does not matter, because in the end, if it had the power to fix itself, it would grow exponentially to an extent beyond our comprehension. Some months ago, I watched a short documentary that sparked my interest and also left me wondering what the true potential of artificial intelligence is. The video was from a renowned YouTube science channel called Kurzgesagt: In a Nutshell, and it handled the science behind AI with accuracy and professionalism, explaining how it works and what the future may hold for us as the creators of this complex selflearning machine. After watching the video, I realized that it is truly difficult to predict what AI will or will not do, which leads to uncertainty and ignorance of something that we are yet to fully understand.

Here is where the fun stuff comes. I initially mentioned natural sciences, mathematics, economics, and linguistics. So, using those fields of study for the following hypothetical situation, what if in 10 years we had over a thousand computers that are able to learn and improve themselves incredibly fast, unbound by physical limitations, trying to solve humanity’s most complex problems in diverse fields, and working together?

This would be equivalent to scientists and experts working non-stop until they found a solution to the problem or question presented to them with all the knowledge needed at their grasp, no matter its difficulty. Finding the cure to cancer? You got it. Solving climate change? Done in the blink of an eye. Stopping all wars and conflicts? Creating a universal language even better than English? Defining the theory of everything that physics still struggles to put together? This is just a glimpse of what could be achieved; the limitations would be unimaginable, and the possibilities endless.

There are many variables to take into account. This is nothing but my opinion and what I believe could be possible to see in the next few years. The future has always been enigmatic, and it will continue doing so. Perhaps I am astoundingly wrong and none of this will ever happen, but still, it is quite riveting to stop for a second and just imagine what technology can do in all of its somewhat scary and beautiful ways.

The future has

Who knows, maybe we are unique, and it is impossible to replicate a fraction of what our minds are capable of. Or maybe we are not as special as we think we are and just created a tool that can wipe us off the map as fast as the speed of light. Humanity reached the top of the biological hierarchy thanks to its intelligence and capacity for solving problems. What could go wrong if we gave that power to a machine? Well, I think we just did.
